Jonelle –
The Housemaid** is one of those rare thrillers that actually *earns* its hype—and then some.
After seeing this book dominate recommendations for what felt like forever, I finally picked it up, expecting nothing more than fast, popcorn-style entertainment. What I got instead was a compulsively readable psychological thriller that had me tense, unsettled, and fully locked in from start to finish. Even though I sensed the twist early on, the way the author orchestrates the slow-burning, razor-sharp cat-and-mouse game is incredibly satisfying. The final third is especially brilliant—taut, clever, and impossible to put down.
I knew I would enjoy this story. I did not expect to love it enough to immediately grab the next book in the series, regardless of mixed opinions. Once you step into Millie’s disturbing, mind-bending world, it’s almost impossible to leave.
Millie is a fascinating protagonist—fresh out of prison for a crime we’re not entirely sure she committed, homeless, living out of her Nissan, scraping by after exhausting bar shifts and endless job rejections. She’s in her mid-twenties, attractive but deliberately hiding it behind oversized clothes and glasses, aware that being “too pretty” can work against her. When she lands a live-in housemaid position at Winchester House—a gated mansion surrounded by pristine landscaping—it feels like a miracle.
Her employer, Nina Winchester, initially appears polished and welcoming: a stay-at-home wife, always dressed in white, projecting sophistication. But beneath the surface lies something volatile. Millie is also introduced to Nina’s unsettling young daughter, whose eerie demeanor and bratty attitude feel ripped straight out of a horror film, and Andrew Winchester—the charming, handsome husband who seems almost too perfect to be real.
Despite the red flags, Millie accepts the conditions: living in a cramped attic room with a tiny window that never opens and a door that locks from the outside. She tolerates Nina’s erratic behavior, biting her tongue through humiliation and emotional manipulation because failure isn’t an option. Without a solid reference, she risks violating parole—and that could mean prison all over again.
As secrets begin to surface and warnings emerge—especially from Enzo, the alluring landscaper who speaks only Italian—Millie realizes this job may be far more dangerous than it appeared. Temptation, jealousy, and paranoia tighten their grip, and the mansion starts to feel less like a fresh start and more like another cage.
By the time the truth fully unravels, the tension is suffocating and deliciously cruel.
This book is gripping, unsettling, and expertly paced. I’m giving it a well-deserved five stars and diving straight into the next installment. If Millie’s journey continues to be even half as twisted as this one, I’m all in.

The story follows Millie, a young woman recently released from prison and struggling to rebuild her life while living out of her car. Desperate for stability and constrained by parole conditions, she accepts a live-in housemaid position at the Winchester household—a large, gated estate that appears ideal on the surface. Her employer, Nina Winchester, initially seems composed and refined, but her unpredictable behavior soon creates an atmosphere of unease. The household also includes Nina’s unsettling daughter and Andrew Winchester, whose charm adds another layer of complexity to Millie’s situation.
As Millie settles into her role—living in a restrictive attic room and enduring emotional volatility—she begins to uncover disturbing secrets about the family. Subtle warnings, mounting tension, and shifting power dynamics steadily transform the job into a psychological trap. The novel builds suspense methodically, leading to a tightly constructed final act that recontextualizes much of what comes before it.
Overall, *The Housemaid* is an effective and accessible thriller that balances character-driven storytelling with sharp twists. Its clear narrative focus and escalating tension make it a compelling read, particularly for fans of domestic psychological suspense.
